I love opals. My engagement ring is an opal. A Lightning Ridge black opal, chosen because it looks like planet Earth. "I want to give you the world," said my husband. It is one of the most beautiful stones I could wish for.
But opals are soft, too soft for daily wear on the hand - and I was not prepared to leave it in a drawer! So I came up with a registered design that lets the ring convert into a pendant, worn close to my heart when my hands are busy.
This solution became the Selkie ring, named for the shape-shifting creature in Celtic sea folklore. A jewel that changes form with your life, the way opals change colour with the light
