Top Tips to Perfect Hat & Jewellery Pairings: It’s All About Face and Space!

When the British Social Season gets into full swing, getting your hat and jewellery pairings right is essential for creating a polished, elegant look. Whether you're attending a wedding, race day, or garden party, the secret to standing out lies in understanding one simple principle: face and space.
Jewellery expert and founder of Juraster, Jessica Cadzow-Collins, advises a more strategic approach to accessorising — starting with your face shape. This often-overlooked element plays a crucial role in determining which hats and jewellery will suit you best.
Read on to the end for Juraster's exclusive hat guide: Jewellery, Face & Space.
Start With Your Face Shape
Grab a see-through acrylic ruler, and measure where your face is widest — across the temples, cheekbones, or mouth-jaw. This will help you determine your face shape: heart, round, oval, square, or oblong. Each shape benefits from different styles of hats and jewellery:
- Heart-shaped faces (wide forehead, narrow chin) suit any hat shape.
- Round faces (widest across cheekbones) are flattered by wide brimmed hats to break the face’s circular outline
- Oval faces (wider at temples) broad brimmed hat with minimal decorative details.
- Square (widest across the mouth-jaw level) suit asymmetrical (soft curved or triangular) shapes e.g. wide brim, discs or pillboxes worn at a steep angle.
- Oblong and Long faces (same width at each point) need brimmed hats with eye-catching details & decorative touches around brim & hat band.
Hat vs. Hair
When you’re not wearing an actual hat, your hairstyle is your ‘hat’. So, avoid the clash of wearing two ‘hats’! Keep your hair drawn away from your face and back behind your neck and ear area tucked, pinned or tied up. Let the hat, jewellery and your neckline frame your face.
Choose Colours to Complement Skin Tone
Hat, outfit and jewellery colours should complement your natural colouring:
- Warm tones (brown, hazel, green eyes) look best in gold and colours with yellow undertone.
- Cool tones (blue or grey eyes) suit silver, white gold and blue-based colours.
- Neutrals like black, white, navy and pillar-box red suit everyone.
Let Your Neckline Frame the Space
Your outfit’s neckline also plays a key role. It creates a visible space between your face and chest that needs to be visually balanced. A scoop, sweetheart or V-neck, for instance, works well on round or square face shapes, while ruffles or gamine collared necklines suit heart-shape faces by reducing the space between collarbone and jaw. Oval face shapes suit any neckline, but oblong and long shapes need a strong, defining horizontal line for balance.
Balance the Space with Jewellery
Once your face shape and neckline are sorted, assess how much empty space there is between the widest part of your face and the neckline. That’s where jewellery comes in.
Round & Square shapes = Small space:
Stick to smaller stud earrings & small charm drops. Could also wear a long, dangling fine charm drop for elongation, but keep most focus up at the ears. Fine dainty necklace or very long line necklace to pull the eye along a vertical axis eg Wayfarer. Square face types look great with their hat worn to one side and this looks great balanced with an earring stack on the opposite side.
Oval, Oblong & Long shapes = Medium space:
Don’t fill this space with too much jewellery. Opt for either larger drop earrings below the jawline or a statement necklace, but not both.
Heart- shape = Large space:
Go bold with long dramatic earrings and a choker or short length necklace.
The Golden Rule: Harmony Between Face, Neckline & Jewellery
When your hat, jewellery, and outfit are in harmony, the result is an effortlessly elegant look that enhances your features, rather than competing with them.
As Jessica puts it: “You are the artwork — the hat and jewellery are just the frame.”
